D-6 Religious Visa Invitation and Extension

Under Appended Table 1-2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act, D-6 (Religious Affairs) status is granted to persons dispatched by a foreign religious or social welfare organization to carry out religious activities at its Korean branch or an affiliated religious organization, and to persons invited by a Korean religious or social welfare organization to carry out social welfare activities. The inviting organization files an Application for Certificate of Visa Eligibility with the immigration office having jurisdiction over its address, attaching, under Appended Table 5 of the Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Act, the dispatch order, a copy of the establishment permit of the religious or social welfare organization, and documents on the organization's support for living expenses. The maximum period of stay granted at one time is 2 years, and to continue activities the person applies for an extension before the period expires, attaching a certificate of employment or the dispatch order. The review looks at objective proof of clerical status and whether the inviting organization can actually provide living expenses and housing.

Procedure

Procedure

  1. 01

Confirm the person's status: Check whether the person is dispatched by a foreign religious organization, such as a pastor, priest, nun, monk, missionary or imam, and confirm documents that objectively show clerical status and the dispatch, such as an ordination certificate, monastic certificate, letter of appointment and dispatch order. Attach translations of documents in foreign languages.

  2. 02

Prepare the inviting organization's documents: Gather the Korean organization's establishment permit or corporate registry certificate, unique identification number certificate, articles of association and activity record. Describing the actual religious activities planned is more persuasive in the review than giving the person a nominal officer title.

  3. 03

Prove support for living expenses: Prepare a confirmation that the parent or inviting organization will provide living expenses and housing, financial records such as bank balances and donation records, and the lease for the housing. If a spouse and minor children come along under F-3 (Dependent Family), show that their living expenses are covered as well.

  4. 04

Apply for the Certificate of Visa Eligibility: The inviting organization submits the application and attachments to the immigration office having jurisdiction over its address; the Minister of Justice reviews it and issues a confirmation number, which the person uses to obtain a D-6 visa at a Korean diplomatic mission before entering Korea.

  5. 05

Alien registration after entry: Complete alien registration at the immigration office for the place of stay within 90 days of entry, submitting documents on the establishment of the religious or social welfare organization. If the place of stay changes, report the change within 15 days of moving in.

  6. 06

Extension of stay: Before the period of stay expires, apply for an extension using the Integrated Application Form with a certificate of employment or the dispatch order, together with records of actual activities such as activity logs, event photos and preaching or volunteer records, and the inviting organization's financial records.

Entering first under another status such as tourism and then changing to D-6 in Korea is not permitted in principle, so the inviting organization should apply for the Certificate of Visa Eligibility before the person enters Korea.
