Hanok Experience Business Registration

Anyone who wants to equip a hanok with lodging experience facilities or traditional culture experience facilities such as traditional games and crafts and let tourists use them must register a hanok experience business, a type of tourist-use facility business, with the head of the city, county or district where the hanok is located under Article 4 of the Tourism Promotion Act and Article 2 of its Enforcement Decree. The building must be a wooden structure whose main frame consists of columns, beams and a Korean-style roof truss and must meet the hanok building standards notified by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; unlike the foreign tourist urban homestay business, there is no registration requirement that the applicant live in the hanok. The registration standards in Annex 1 of the Enforcement Decree include a lodging experience space under 230㎡ in total floor area (with exceptions for cultural heritage, excellent architectural asset and ordinance-designated hanok), bathrooms or shower facilities, fire extinguishers and a stand-alone smoke detector in each guest room, drinking water supply facilities, a system for disinfection at least once a month, a manager on site during business hours, and a posted rate table. The processing period stated on the tourism business registration application form is 14 days.

Procedure

Procedure

  1. 01

Confirm hanok status: Compare the building register with the actual building to check that it is a wooden structure with columns, beams and a Korean-style roof truss and that it meets the notified hanok building standards. Hanok designated or registered as cultural heritage and hanok registered as excellent architectural assets are not subject to the notified standards.

  2. 02

Calculate the lodging space area: Calculate whether the total floor area used for lodging experiences, including guest rooms and amenities such as bathrooms, is under 230㎡. For hanok designated by city, county or district ordinance, such as hanok-village houses or old family homes, check the ordinance to see whether the area exception applies.

  3. 03

Install fire safety equipment: Keep at least one fire extinguisher in or near each guest room; if lodging experiences are offered, install a stand-alone smoke detector in each guest room and, with individual heating, a carbon monoxide alarm as well. Cooking facilities must be installed in line with gas and fire safety laws.

  4. 04

Prepare hygiene and management systems: Arrange facilities to supply tap water or water meeting drinking water quality standards, a system for disinfection at least once a month, bedding laundry, and ventilation, and plan to station a hanok manager during business hours.

  5. 05

File for registration: Submit the tourism business registration application with the business plan, floor plan and layout of the facilities, and the hanok experience business facility list to the tourism department of the competent city, county or district office. The processing period stated on the form is 14 days, and a tourism business registration certificate is issued if the standards are met.

  6. 06

Post-registration management: If lodging experiences are offered, post the rate table at the reception desk and on the booking platform screen and charge only the posted rates, and complete safety and hygiene training. Installing hidden cameras for illegal filming in the facility is subject to dispositions including cancellation of registration.
