Permanent residence, overseas Koreans & family stay

How to Fill Out the Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation — Proof of Place of Stay for Dormitories and Family Homes, and Entries That Reduce Requests for Supplementation

When applying for foreigner registration or permission for extension of the period of stay, you must submit documents proving your place of stay, and after a move you report the change of place of stay within 15 days from the date of moving in, attaching proof such as a lease agreement or sales contract. If you live in a family member's or acquaintance's home, a company dormitory or an accommodation facility without a contract in your own name, you prove your place of stay with a Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation written by the person providing the accommodation. The confirmation states the personal details of the foreigner and the provider, their relationship, the ownership type, the residence type and the starting date, and is signed by the provider, together with the provider's proof of ownership or lease and a copy of the provider's ID. If the address on the confirmation differs from the address in Korea on the application, or the starting date or signature is blank, the place of stay is not proven and you may be asked to supplement the documents.

Procedure

  1. 1. Check which proof of place of stay applies

If you have a lease agreement or sales contract in your own name, that contract proves your place of stay. If you live in a family member's, relative's or acquaintance's home, a dormitory provided by your company, or an accommodation facility, prepare a Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation written by the accommodation provider. The attached documents section of the report of change of place of stay also lists documents such as a dormitory residency confirmation or a receipt for goshiwon accommodation fees that show you live at that address.

  2. 2. Enter the details of the foreigner and the provider

In the foreigner section, enter nationality, foreign resident registration number (or overseas Korean residence report number), name, phone number and address, and write the address exactly as the address in Korea on the application, down to the building and unit number. In the provider section, enter nationality, resident or foreign resident registration number and name, and mark the relationship to the foreigner (relative, employer, other), ownership type (own, rent, other) and residence type (private residence, dormitory, accommodation facility, other). Do not leave out the starting date of accommodation, the date of writing or the provider's signature.

  3. 3. Company dormitories are written in the name of the representative

When a company employing foreigners provides a dormitory or similar housing, the provider section contains the personal details of the employer, the representative or the representative of the corporation. In the confirmation section, choose either the representative's name with signature or seal, or the company name with the official company seal. If only a staff member's name and signature appear, the provider is not confirmed, so the form is completed in the name of the representative or the corporation.

  4. 4. Gather the provider's supporting documents

Together with the confirmation, the accommodation provider gives the foreigner a certified copy of the register or a lease agreement showing that the accommodation is owned or leased by the provider, and a copy of the provider's ID. If the provider is a tenant, check that the address on the lease agreement matches the accommodation address on the confirmation. For a company dormitory, a lease agreement in the company's name or the building's certified copy of the register serves as proof of ownership or lease.

  5. 5. Apply for registration or extension, or report the change of place of stay

Foreigner registration is filed within 90 days from the date of entry at the immigration office having jurisdiction over your place of stay, and permission for extension is applied for before the period of stay ends, both on the integrated application form with proof of place of stay attached. After a move, report the change of place of stay within 15 days from the date of moving in to the new si, gun or gu office, eup, myeon or dong office, or the competent immigration office, bringing your residence card, and the report can also be filed through the information network designated by the Minister of Justice.

Checked against the statutes on

Statutes and public notices change, so each case needs to be checked individually. Statute titles are given in English for reference. The Korean statutes are the authoritative text.

Check these first

  • If the accommodation address on the confirmation, the address in Korea on the application and the address on the provider's register or lease agreement differ, the place of stay cannot be proven and you may be asked to supplement, so match them down to the building and unit number.
  • When a whole family reports a change of place of stay, family members other than the owner or tenant mark the residence type on the report form as other.

Frequently asked questions

When is a Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation needed?
It is needed when you live in accommodation provided by someone else without a lease agreement or sales contract in your own name. Applications for foreigner registration and extension of the period of stay require proof of place of stay, and a report of change of place of stay must also attach a lease agreement, sales contract or other document confirming the move. If you live in a family member's or acquaintance's home, a company dormitory or an accommodation facility, the confirmation written by the provider serves as that proof.
Who signs the confirmation for a company dormitory?
The employer or representative, or for a corporation its representative, is the provider. The provider section contains the representative's details, and in the confirmation section you choose either the representative's name with signature or seal, or the company name with the official company seal. A lease agreement in the company's name or the building's certified copy of the register and a copy of the representative's ID are submitted with it.
What documents must the accommodation provider give?
The Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation, a document proving ownership or lease of the accommodation, and a copy of the provider's ID. Proof of ownership or lease means a certified copy of the register, a lease agreement or similar, and its address must match the accommodation address on the confirmation for the place of stay to be proven.
When must a foreigner report a change of place of stay after moving?
Within 15 days from the date of moving in. The report is filed with the new si, gun or gu office, eup, myeon or dong office, or the competent immigration office, bringing your residence card. Failing to report within the deadline is subject to a fine of up to 1,000,000 won under Article 98 of the Immigration Act.
Does an administrative agent handle the confirmation and the report of change of place of stay?
Yes. Hwang Yunsang Administrative Office organizes the entries of the Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation and the proof of ownership or lease together with the accommodation provider, and prepares and submits on your behalf the foreigner registration or extension application and the report of change of place of stay.
